About the topic
Piles are swollen tissue around the anus. Bleeding should not automatically be blamed on piles without assessment.
Practical care & comfort
- Keep stools soft with fibre and appropriate fluids.
- Avoid straining or spending too long on the toilet.
- A warm bath and gentle patting dry may ease discomfort.
Symptoms & signs
- Bright red blood after passing stool.
- Itching, soreness or lumps around the anus.
- Mucus or a feeling that the bowel has not emptied fully.
When to speak with a clinician: Get medical advice for new rectal bleeding, repeated symptoms, or symptoms that do not settle.

Softer stools can reduce straining. Rectal bleeding still needs appropriate assessment.
Foods & nutrition to follow
- Choose fibre from vegetables, fruit, pulses and wholegrains.

Foods to limit or avoid
- Cut down on alcohol.
- Reduce caffeine from drinks such as coffee, tea and cola.
